Registration is open for administrators who are interested in the Kentucky Association of School Administrators’ Kentucky Leadership Academy

The mission of the Kentucky Leadership Academy is to provide ongoing professional growth opportunities for school and district leaders that will result in building and sustaining leadership capacity and creating a climate of resiliency for whole school improvement.

Participants will be included in a cadre that will be assigned a facilitator who will introduce the sessions and provide continuous networking opportunities for members. Participants also will attend four regional cadre sessions, two national consultant days and a June (2014) two-day summer leadership retreat.

Participants in KLA will learn how to master being a highly effective leader who:

  • must be grounded in core values and have a sense of moral purpose that is visible and communicated
  • are change agents
  • celebrate success at all levels
  • recognize and communicate the school/district’s deficiencies and collaboratively, with the learning community, work for improvement
  • develop positive relationships for the betterment of the school community and the learners of the school/district
  • are life-long learners, continuously striving to improve their professional practices
  • have high expectations for themselves, their staff, students, parents and community

A KLA kickoff event will be July 10 in Lexington from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Frederick Hess, an educator, political scientist and author who studies a range of K-12 and higher education issues, will be the keynote speaker.

Hess also serves as executive editor of Education Next; on the Review Board for the Broad Prize in Urban Education; and on the Board of Directors of the American Board for the Certification of Teaching Excellence. A former high school social studies teacher, he has taught at the University of Virginia, the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, Rice University and Harvard University.
